Burke Post 21 baseball opens season

The Burke County Post 21 baseball team opened their season at Shuey Field with a 10-0 win over Hickory Post 48 and a 3-1 loss to Caldwell Post 29.

Mason Mosteller went the distance vs. Hickory pitching a complete six innings by giving up only two hits and striking out seven batters.

Brady Davis scored three runs for Post 21 with Jacob Davis batting in two runs.

Jacob Davis started on the mound vs. Caldwell pitching a no-hitter for four innings and ultimately just allowed one hit despite the loss and striking out seven Post 29 batters.

Barger Shook pitched the seventh inning in relief for Post 21 with Lane Barrier scoring the lone run in the second inning off a Caden Barker double.

Burke Post 21 softball opens season

The Burke County Post 21 softball team opened their season in a return to American Legion Fastpitch play by hosting McDowell Post 56 at Patton High winning the opener 4-3 and dropping the nightcap 6-3.

Makenzie Powell (3 hits, 2 RBI), Maria Medrano (RBI), Jolann Buff (RBI), Marleigh Carswell (RBI), Kayden Maines, Ellie Shuping, Reagan Webb, and Madelyn LeMaster all scored a run for Post 21.

Carswell started the opener in the pitchers circle tossing four strikeouts with LeMaster tossing three strikeouts in the nightcap.

The Post 21 junior legion team opened their season at Cherryville in a split winning the nightcap 6-2.

Reagan Webb, Maddy Hudson, Kayden Maines, and Finley Duvall each batted in a run with Hudson scoring two runs for Post 21.

Madelyn LeMaster struck out six Cherryville batters while only giving up four hits.

Baseball Champions crowned

The Valdese 13U baseball team won back-to-back Foothills Athletic Association championships after a thrilling extra-innings win at Fletcher Park.

Tigers team members included James Pire, Eli Palacios, Keets Charlet, Reid Jenkins, Kayden Yelton, Ryland Bowman, Skylar Abernathy, Brylan Pearson, Remy Treadway, Anderson Clark, Andrew Doalson, Joseph Zimmardi, Kayson Webb, and the coaching trio of Craig, Nathan, and Denver Treadway.

The Valdese 10U Black baseball team will compete for the championship tonight at Baird Park in Sawmills.

The Ray Childers Pirates and George Hildebrand Eagles tied for the Burke County 10U baseball championship.

Pirates team members included Elijah Trivette, Samuel Weidner, Ellys Henry, Grayson Yang, Gunner Wilson, Micah Storey, Brock Hentschel, Cooper Stancavage, Wyatt Poarch, Jackson Stockham, and Miles Clatterbucle with coaches Daniel Trivette, Justin Weidner, Brandon Greer, and Brandon Henschel.

In the last week of the regular season, Samuel Weidner recorded a perfect game with 11 strikeouts.
