Post 21 softball splits with Caldwell

The Burke County Post 21 junior and senior legion softball teams visited Baird Park to face Caldwell Post 29

The juniors team won 9-4 sparked by a 3-run home run from Emmalin Clark, finishing 2 for 3 with a fifth-inning single.

Finley Duvall (2 singles, run), Jo Buff (single, double, RBI, run), Kayden Maines (2 singles, 2 RBI, run), Ady Moorefield (double, single, 2 RBI, 2 runs), and Bella Creegan (single, double, RBI) also had two hits each.

Madelyn LeMaster struck out seven Post 29 batters in the complete game win.

The seniors team fell 5-2 despite out-hitting Post 29 10-5 led by two hits each from Maria Medrano, Kyndal Morrison, and Ellie Shuping.

The two scoring plays for Post 21 were a fourth-inning bases-loaded walk issued to Makenzie Powell scoring Alex Maines and a Shuping fifth-inning double scoring Morrison.

Marleigh Carswell struck out four Caldwell batters while holding Post 29 off the scoreboard for three consecutive innings.

The Post 21 juniors team hosted Hickory Post 48, falling in the opener 10-8. The nightcap was suspended in the third inning, with Post 21 holding a 10-5 lead.

Post 21 baseball wins over Wilkes

The Burke County Post 21 baseball team started off the week with a 16-4 five-inning home win over Wilkes Post 31.

Cannon Morrison (2 singles, walk) and Wyatt Hullette (2 singles, walk, 2 RBI) each scored three runs for Post 21.

Brady Davis led the way with four RBI’s and scored two runs along with recording a double and a triple.

Maddox Mosteller (double, single, walk, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Landry Duvall (2 singles, 2 RBI, run), Zach Carson (4 walks, run, RBI), Kyle Self (single, walk, RBI), Rhett Houston (double, walk, RBI, run), Barger Shook (single, run), and Zeb Koone (walk, run) were other key batters.

Self pitched a nearly complete game striking out six batters until Davis came in relief to record the final out.

Other results for Post 21 included a 3-2 eighth-inning loss to Rutherford Post 423, a 12-1 loss to the Gaston Braves (Post 144-266), and a 7-3 loss to Gastonia Post 23.

Sunday’s home loss to Gastonia started scoreless for the first four innings while Cannon Morrison, Brady Davis, and Caden Barker each later scored a run for Burke County.

Landry Duvall led defensively with three line outs at third base and starting pitcher Aaron Duncan struck out four Post 23 batters in six innings of work.

Byrd 4th at NCAA Championships

East Burke alum KJ Byrd continues to make history in his freshman track & field season at the University of Louisville by placing fourth in the NCAA championship decathlon event.

Byrd’s marks included 10.97 in the 100 meters, 23-3.5 in the long Jump, 40-5 in the shot put, 6-8.25 in the high jump, 48.98 in the 400 meters, 14.60 in the 110-meter hurdles, 130-8 in the discus throw, 17-5 in the pole vault, 164-1 in the javelin throw, and 4:44.32 in the 1500 meters.

He finished with a two-day total of 7,842 points while the pole vault mark was a brand-new freshman record for Byrd and earned first-team All-American honors.
