Burke County 8U All-Star Baseball

The Burke County 8U All-Star baseball team finished runner-up in a Tarheel League regional tournament played in Shelby and received a bid to the state tournament played in Hickory.

Burke opened with a 13-0 loss to eventual champion Wendell followed by a 9-0 loss to Garner.

Cole Leonard, Grayson Yang, Silas Scott, and Malaki Pritchard got on base in the opening game.

Other team members included Kenyan Barnes, Lawson Burns, Jackson Church, Jace Craig, Blayke Curtis, Alby Gantt, Kale Parker, and Skylin Pritchard.

Burke 8U All-Star coaches included Ronnie Leonard (head), Michael Curtis, Zach Lowder, and Zach Scott.

Hildebran 15U Baseball

The Hildebran 15U baseball team won the Tarheel League District 1 tournament to play in the state tournament in Hickory split between Lenoir-Rhyne University and P.D. Fowler Field.

Hildebran opened the state tournament with a 12-5 win over Hickory followed by a 2-1 win over Louisburg to advance to the semifinal round.

Defending champions Williamston handed Hildebran an 8-1 loss to fall into the consolation round.

Edenton ended Hildebran’s tournament run with an 8-4 loss.

Landon Harris, Wyatt Bonorden, and Kam O’Dell pitched complete games for Hildebran, with Nathan Fortenberry playing 21 error-less innings at catcher.

Other team members included Trevor Bentley, Hank Lowman, Kenny Morrison, DeMarcus Ault, John Snow, Gavin Perkins, and Nathan Burns.

The Hildebran 15U coaches included Cody Townsend, Shawn O’Dell, Eric Lowman, and Waylon Bonorden.

East Burke Friday Night Lights 5K

The East Burke football and wrestling programs hosted the inaugural Friday Night Lights 5K last Friday at Danny Williams Field.

Noah “Gator” Gilbert was the overall race winner with a time of 20:01.14 as part of 18-49 male division.

Other division winners included Kade Tolbert (17U male), Cadence Willis (17U female), Patricia Godfrey (18-49 female), Chris Fulbright (50-100 male), and Amy Brooks (50-100 female).

Valdese Torpedo Swimming

The season has wind down for the summer with a road meet in Granite Falls with the Tarheel League Championship next Saturday in Shelby.
