JV Cavs shutout Patton in opener

The East Burke JV football team only recorded five first downs in Thursday’s home opener with Patton.

That little statistic is overlooked by the performance of the JV Cavaliers winning by a score of 42-0.

Only running 11 total offensive plays in the first quarter, East Burke built up a 20-0 lead with touchdown runs by Vernon Quintana (30 yds), Zayne Newman (20 yds), and Jesiah Rees (51 yds).

DJ Weston was the fourth East Burke player to score a touchdown with a 13-yard second-quarter run and Newman ran in his second two-point conversion run to give the JV Cavs a 28-0 halftime lead.

The scoring was completed in the third quarter with Quintana running in a 36-yard touchdown and Rees running back a Panther punt for an 82-yard return.

Quintana ran in a two-point conversion following Rees punt return and finished with 98 rushing yards.

Rees finished with 94 rushing yards followed by Newman (38), Carter Bennett (35), and Weston (11).

East Burke defensive leaders included Ossie Burkeen (5 tackles, 2 TFL), Trevor Fraley (4 tackles, forced fumble), Daniel Cook (4 tackles), Zane Taylor (3 tackles, 2 TFL), Bryson Church (2 tackles, TFL, fumble recovery), and Maddox Rector (2 TFL).
