KJ Byrd, East Burke, University of Louisville Track & Field

KJ Byrd is already making his mark at the University of Louisville and in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

He became the first freshman to win the ACC indoor men’s heptathlon championship event with a school-record 5,903 points.

The ACC championship win was made possible by first place marks in the long Jump (23-06), high jump (6-11 3/4), and pole vault (16-08 3/4) with finishing fifth in the 60 meters and 60 hurdles, sixth in the shot put, and ninth in the 1000 meters.

Byrd followed with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Division One Indoor Championships earning All-American honors by scoring 5,807 points.

Avery Fraley, East Burke, East Carolina Track & Field

Avery Fraley also made his mark in his freshman season at East Carolina University by placing third in the men’s heptathlon at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

He became the first Pirate track & field athlete to cross over 5,000 points (5,150 total) by winning the 60 hurdles (8.16), finishing third in the high jump, and fourth in the shot put and pole vault.

The third place finish also gave Fraley all-conference honors as the Pirates kickoff their outdoor season at the end of March hosting the Bill Carson Invitational.

Caleb Johnson-White, East Burke, Montreat College Wrestling

Caleb Johnson-White completed his junior season at Montreat with a 6-12 mark including wins vs. Brewton-Parker (GA) (major decision), Liberty University (pinfall), and Rochester Christian (pinfall) as a 165 lb competitor.

He also earned two wins (pinfall, decision) in the Hawk Classic Open as he enters his senior season with 20 career wins.

Maddison Powell, Draughn, Caldwell CC Softball

Maddison Powell has played in 24 games at second base for the Lady Cobras in her sophomore season recording 12 hits, including a 3 for 4 performance vs. nearby Catawba Valley Community College with a run and a RBI.

Powell has also totaled 16 runs and eight RBI’s

Katie Cozort, Draughn, Lenoir-Rhyne Softball

Fellow Lady Wildcat teammate Katie Cozort has played eight games to start her sophomore season for the Lady Bears.

Recently, she recorded a hit and an RBI and scored a run against UVA-Wise while also adding an RBI single against Lincoln Memorial.

Cozort is playing at three positions for the L-R softball team this season pinch hitter, designated player, and left fielder.

Maddie Crouch, Draughn, Southern Wesleyan Softball

Maddie Crouch has started her freshman season at Southern Wesleyan University by playing in all 20 games as the starting shortstop.

She is currently third in batting average (.383) with 23 hits, 23 runs, and eight RBI’s while leading the Lady Knights in stolen bases (9).

Crouch’s most runs (4) came against Carson Newman while hitting home runs vs. Fort Valley State and Anderson.

Regan Winkler, Draughn, Brevard Softball

Regan Winkler started off her junior season by playing 11 games for the Lady Tornadoes leading with 16 hits and a .471 batting average with three scored runs and six runs batted in.

She had a 4 for 4 performance vs. Dean College in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic tournament at Myrtle Beach

Her season-best RBI total (3) came against Wesleyan (GA).

Katie Hamm, Draughn, Lees McRae Softball

Katie Hamm pitched in three games to start her freshman season at Lees McRae College for 4.2 innings totaling four strikeouts

Trey Jensen, Draughn, Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball

Trey Jensen has played as a redshirt freshman center fielder, pinch hitter, and pinch runner in six games.

Jensen has recorded two hits for the Bears with an RBI double vs. Columbus State
