Cavs win Homecoming

It’s an excellent feeling for East Burke fans to see the Cavaliers win in the ultra-competitive Catawba Valley 2A Conference.

Homecoming night was the time to get it done, defeating West Caldwell 28-7 ahead of a two-game week with Newton-Conover and Bandys.

The win for East Burke (2-6, 1-4) also progressed off a 13-6 road loss to West Lincoln in the previous week.

“Our word of the week was finish, (our main purpose was) for us to finish some drives,” said East Burke coach Allen Wittenberg.

The Cavaliers were able to finish four drives with points, starting with Cannon Morrison scoring on a 10-yard first-quarter run and completing a 25-yard second-quarter touchdown pass to Trevor Fraley.

Darren Hammons followed with two touchdown runs and two 2-point conversion runs.

Morrison (98), Hammons (90), and Tyler Brown (88) kept the Cavalier ground game running all night.

With Morrison adding 47 passing yards on two completions to Fraley, he topped his 133 offensive yardage at West Lincoln with 145 total yards vs. West Caldwell.

“I just built my confidence up this week; credit to the line by just getting to make plays,” said Morrison.

On the defensive side, the Cavaliers had to contain dual-threat quarterback Joshton Blankenship only giving up one touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Defensive efforts were led by Ossie Burkeen (TFL, sack), Aiden Deal (2 TFL), Nathan Rees (TFL), Daniel Cook (sack), Zac Bennett (INT), Kendale Cook (INT), and Jordan Fox (INT).

“Losing was not an option in this game. Everybody just did their job and listened to the coaches,” said Fox.

Coach Witt and the rest of the Cavaliers now look forward to the challenging week ahead, believing they will be up to the task.

“We got to play two good football teams; I think we are coming around and playing our best football; we can put our best foot forward.”
